Nissan Car Key Replacement: What Type of Key Does Your Vehicle Use?
Not all Nissan keys are created equal, and the replacement process differs significantly depending on your model year and trim level. Older Nissans — roughly pre-2000 — use a standard double-sided metal key that can be cut at a shop. From around 1997 onward, Nissan began rolling out transponder chip keys, where a small RFID chip embedded in the key head must be programmed to match your vehicle's immobilizer system. If the chip is missing or unprogrammed, your engine simply won't start, even if the key turns in the ignition. From the mid-2000s onward, many Nissan models — including the Altima, Maxima, Murano, Rogue, Sentra, Frontier, and Pathfinder — moved to key fobs with remote entry buttons paired to a transponder shank. More recent trims feature Nissan's Intelligent Key system, a proximity-based smart key that allows push-button start without ever removing the fob from your pocket.
Our technicians are trained and experienced with all of these systems. We carry a wide range of Nissan-compatible key blanks and OEM-spec transponder chips, and our mobile programming units allow us to cut and code a replacement key on-site — without towing your vehicle anywhere. The result is a fully functional replacement key, often completed faster than a dealership appointment and without the overhead costs that come with a service bay. Whether you need a single replacement key, a second spare, or a full re-key after a theft, we handle it all in the field, anywhere in Los Angeles.
